The solar cycle: parity interactions and amplitude modulation

چکیده

Two mechanisms for producing modulation of the basic eleven year solar cycle are included in a nonlinear αω dynamo model. In the first, the modulation of the toroidal magnetic field energy is associated with large changes in the parity (symmetry) of solutions. The second mechanism introduces modulation of the magnetic field by including the action of the Lorentz force in driving macrodynamic velocity perturbations (the Malkus-Proctor mechanism) in the limit of small magnetic Prandtl numbers. The nonlinear model shows that solutions can display both types ofmodulation in different parameter regimes. For a suitable choice of parameters solutions display behaviour similar to that observed on the Sun. Themagnetic field is significantly modulated whilst staying largely dipolar. However when the field is weak, during Grand Minima, the field is no longer symmetric and magnetic activity is confined to one hemisphere.

Modulation and symmetry changes in stellar dynamos

Stellar dynamos are governed by non-linear partial differential equations (PDEs) which admit solutions with dipole, quadrupole or mixed symmetry (i.e. with different parities). These PDEs possess periodic solutions that describe magnetic cycles, and numerical studies reveal two different types of modulation. For modulations of Type 1 there are parity changes without significant changes of ampli...

SOLAR CYCLE DEPENDENCE OF THE DIURNAL ANISOTROPY OF 0.6 TeV COSMIC- RAY INTENSITY OBSERVED WITH THE MATSUSHIRO UNDERGROUND MUON DETECTOR

We analyze the temporal variation of the diurnal anisotropy of sub-TeV cosmic-ray intensity observed with the Matsushiro (Japan) underground muon detector over two full solar activity cycles in 1985–2008. We find an anisotropy component in the solar diurnal anisotropy superimposed on the Compton–Getting anisotropy due to Earth’s orbital motion around the Sun. The phase of this additional anisot...

High-amplitude, long-term X-ray variability in the solar-type star HD 81809: the beginning of an X-ray activity cycle?

We present the initial results from our XMM-Newton program aimed at searching for X-ray activity cycles in solar-type stars. HD 81809 is a G2-type star (somewhat more evolved than the Sun, and with a less massive companion) with a pronounced 8.2 yr chromospheric cycle, as evident from from the Mt. Wilson program data. We present here the results from the initial 2.5 years of XMM-Newton observat...

Spatial and Temporal Variability of the Gamma Radiation from Earth’s Atmosphere during a Solar Cycle

The Solar Maximum Mission satellite’s Gamma Ray Spectrometer spent much of its 1980–1989 mission pointed at Earth, accumulating spectra of atmospheric albedo γ-rays. Its 28◦ orbit ensured that a range of geomagnetic latitudes was sampled. We measured the variation with time and cutoff rigidity of some key γ-ray lines which are diagnostic of the intensity of the Galactic cosmic radiation penetra...
